House of Representatives
Session of 2017 - 2018 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: February 1, 2017 09:46 AM
From: Representative Tina M. Davis
To: All House members
Subject: Requesting Co-sponsorship: Display of POW/MIA Flag

In the near future, I will re-introduce House Bill 1969 of the 2015-2016 Legislative Session. This measure would require the display of the official Prisoner of War/ Missing in Action (POW/MIA) flag from public buildings throughout the Commonwealth.

According to the U.S. Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency of the U.S. Department of Defense, nearly 83,000 of our fellow Americans have been listed as missing during conflicts of World War II, the Korean War, the Cold War, Iraq and other conflicts (including the Persian Gulf and Libya).

It behooves us to recognize the sacrifices made by our service members and their families in the protection of our freedoms. Displaying the POW/MIA flag is a visual reminder of our gratitude to these brave individuals and the reason I believe we should require the display of this flag at all public buildings across Pennsylvania.

Presently, Pennsylvania statute permits the POW/MIA flag to be displayed from the flagpoles of public buildings. However, said display is not required. My legislation will require the POW/MIA flag to be displayed at county courthouses, Department of Military and Veterans’ Affairs buildings, other large State office buildings (as determined by the Governor), and the State Capitol.

I hope you will join me in honoring the brave Pennsylvanians who have sacrificed in their service to our Commonwealth and our country by co-sponsoring this important legislation.
