MEMORANDUM

Posted: January 31, 2017 11:05 AM
From: Representative David R. Millard
To: All House members
Subject: Stuart Tank Memorial Highway

In the near future, I will be introducing legislation designating a portion of State Route 93 in Columbia County as the Stuart Tank Memorial Highway.

The American Car & Foundry – Berwick employed thousands of citizens from northeastern Pennsylvania during the World War II era. These workers produced over 15,000 Stuart Light Tanks as their contribution to the Arsenal of Democracy and to the thousands of soldiers, Marines and Allied forces who rode these tanks to victory over tyranny.

The United States Ordnance Department required road testing of each Stuart Light Tank prior to government acceptance. A portion of State Route 93 between Berwick and Orangeville was the route selected for this road testing. From 1940 through 1944, Stuart Light Tanks were road tested on this route at a rate of up to 40 tanks per day.

Stuart Light tanks have been recognized by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission with a historical marker at the current entrance to what had been the American Car & Foundry – Berwick plant complex.

I invite you to join me in honoring the Stuart Tank and the people that made them by becoming a co-sponsor of this bill.
