MEMORANDUM

Posted: January 25, 2017 01:07 PM
From: Representative Angel Cruz
To: All House members
Subject: Eliminate Waiting Period for Marriage Licenses (Former HB 1218)

In the near future, I intend to reintroduce legislation that would eliminate the mandatory three-day waiting period to receive a marriage license in Pennsylvania.

Pennsylvania’s three-day waiting period was put in place in order to allow time for blood test results when such tests were required by the Board of Medical Examiners. The required testing was repealed in 1997, yet the three-day waiting period remains, thus posing an inconvenience to marriage license applicants.

More than half of all states have no waiting period to receive a marriage license, and it is time for Pennsylvania to do the same.

I ask that you join me by co-sponsoring this legislation. Thank you in advance for your consideration.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact my Harrisburg office at 717-705-1925.
