Subject: | Designating August 2017 as “Pennsylvania Produce Month” |
In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution designating the month of August 2017 as “Pennsylvania Produce Month.” In the Commonwealth, there are 4,300 farm families managing approximately 55,000 acres producing more than 330,000 tons of vegetables. Pennsylvania’s vegetable growers are national leaders in the production and processing of many fruits and vegetables. For every $100 spent at a farmers markets, $62 stays in the local economy, and $99 stays in state. Many of the state’s farms and orchards sell their products at local farmers markets or have contracts to be sold in local grocery stores. The ability to have local fruits and vegetables readily available benefits the local economies, as well as the public health, as they are part of a balanced diet and provide many nutritional benefits. Please join me in sponsoring this resolution to highlight the importance of the produce industry in Pennsylvania. |
