Subject: | Political Advertisement Tax |
In the near future I will be re-introducing legislation (HB 403 of 2011) that imposes a 6 percent tax on political advertising. The proceeds of this tax will be directed to the General Fund. It is estimated that this year’s Senate race between Katie McGinty and Senator Pat Toomey was the most expensive Senate race ever, with over $165 million dollars spent. In addition, as I am sure you are all aware, Presidential campaigns are spending over a billion dollars. I am sure that our constituents would agree that political advertising is not a necessity and should be included among items on which a sales tax is imposed. Our Commonwealth has implemented similar taxes in the past and there is no reason this non-essential purchase should be exempted. Please join me in supporting this proposal. |
