MEMORANDUM

Posted: January 13, 2017 11:46 AM
From: Representative Angel Cruz
To: All House members
Subject: Diabetes Testing (Former HB 558)

In the near future, I plan to reintroduce legislation that amends the Public School Code to provide for testing for diabetes prior to a child’s admittance to school.

About 215,000 young people under 20 years of age in the United States had diabetes in 2010, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). While still rare in children under age 10, the incidence of Type 2 Diabetes has increased dramatically in the last decade, especially in minority populations, according to the American Diabetes Association (ADA).

Many children have had no symptoms before they are diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes. Usually, the illness is discovered when a blood or urine test taken for another reason shows diabetes. If a child is overweight and gets little or no exercise, he or she may be at risk for Type 2 Diabetes. Early detection efforts can help identify risks such as these and allow children and their families to take actions to reduce or eliminate them. For health and financial reasons, it is better to detect and treat diabetes in its early stages.

Please join me in co-sponsoring this very important piece of legislation. Thank you in advance for your consideration.
