Subject: | Providing exclusive handicapped parking |
In the near future I plan to introduce a bill which would enable municipalities, in specific circumstances, to make exclusive to the placard holder, residential handicapped parking. Currently, if an individual receives a handicapped parking space in front of their residence, any vehicle with a handicapped license plate or placard may legally park in the space. The handicapped residential parking space generally is requested in areas where on-street parking spaces are at a premium. If the handicapped person has a severe disability, especially one that requires life supporting equipment, access to their home may be denied if another handicapped vehicle is parked in front of their home. My bill would allow a municipality to make a handicapped space exclusive in limited instances where the disabled person can document a severe disability and the need for exclusive use of the space. Please join me in co-sponsoring this legislation. |
