Session of 2017 - 2018 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: January 9, 2017 11:37 AM
From: Representative Eddie Day Pashinski
To: All House members
Subject: Workers’ Memorial Day - April 28th 2017

In the near future, I plan to re-introduce House Resolution 296 of 2015-2016 Legislative Session. This measure recognizes the Greater Wilkes-Barre Labor Council and commemorates “Workers’ Memorial Day” in Pennsylvania.

Workers’ Memorial Day is observed on April 28th each year to honor those workers who have lost their lives on the job and to acknowledge the families and communities who suffer as a result of workplace deaths, illnesses and injuries. This observance provides us the opportunity to recommit ourselves to creating good jobs and safe and healthy workplaces for our fellow citizens.

According to the Federal Bureau of Labor Statistics, nearly 3 million individuals were affected by non-fatal work-related injuries and illnesses and over 4,679 worker fatalities occurred nationwide in the past year. During 2014 alone, Pennsylvania lost 175 workers due to injuries suffered in the workplace.

This year, the Greater Wilkes-Barre Labor Council will hold its eleventh annual Workers’ Memorial Day event and candlelight vigil on April 27, 2017. In recognizing this local organization and the national observance of this important day, we honor our workers, both here in Pennsylvania and across this nation.

As we pay homage to those lost and provide support to their families, our goal must be to strive
for the appropriate oversight and to take every necessary step to ensure a safe, healthy and
hazard free workplace. Supporting our workers as they labor to provide for their families and
communities is critical to maintaining a productive, thriving Commonwealth.

I hope you will join me in honoring our workers by co-sponsoring this resolution
