| Subject: | Resolution – Designating January 30, 2017 as “Pennsylvanians with Disabilities Day” in Pennsylvania |
| In the near future, I will be introducing a resolution designating January 30, 2017, as “Pennsylvanians with Disabilities Day.” The resolution seeks to commemorate “Pennsylvanians with Disabilities Day” and recognize residents with disabilities who have distinguished themselves and the Commonwealth in the spirit of the late President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Act 71 of 1988 (P.L. 413, No. 71) initially designated January 30, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s birthday, as the “Day of the Disabled” in Pennsylvania. Then, Act 14 of 1993 (P.L. 44, No. 14) amended Act 71 of 1988 to rename the day as “Pennsylvanians with Disabilities Day.” More recently in March of 2016, Governor Wolf issued Executive Order 2016-03 establishing an “Employment First” policy for all Commonwealth executive branch agencies and exploring policies for increasing competitive integrated employment for Pennsylvanians with disabilities. These actions, along with this resolution, demonstrate that Pennsylvanians with disabilities are valued members of our society who deserve the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Approval of this resolution is the best means to commemorate “Pennsylvanians with Disabilities Day” on an annual basis. Please join me in co-sponsoring this important resolution. |
