| Subject: | Resolution Recognizing the 100th Anniversary of Lions Clubs International |
| In the near future, I will be introducing a resolution recognizing Lions Clubs International on its 100th anniversary. In 1917, Melvin Jones' vision of starting an organization to help those in need became a reality, and a movement began to improve the lives of vulnerable people around the world. That year, Mr. Jones and fellow business leaders started the “Association of Lions Clubs.” Today, Lions Clubs International has over 46,000 local clubs, which provide services in approximately 210 countries. The organization is widely known for its efforts to assist the blind and visually impaired, providing vision screening services, guide dog sponsorships, and support for pediatric eye care centers. The Commonwealth has a well-known connection to Lions Clubs International. In 1939, Lion Carl Edwin Stotz of Williamsport appealed for funding from local Lions Clubs and other community organizations to start a baseball program for children. That year, the first Little League game was played in Williamsport, which remains the Little League capitol of the world and home to the Little League World Series. Guided by the motto of Melvin Jones, “You can’t get very far until you start doing something for somebody else,” Lions Clubs International is the world's largest service organization. Its International Foundation has given more than $826 million in grants to support humanitarian efforts across the globe Please join me in recognizing Lions Clubs International on its 100th anniversary of serving those in need. |
