House of Representatives
Session of 2017 - 2018 Regular Session

MEMORANDUM

Posted: December 1, 2016 01:05 PM
From: Representative Mark M. Gillen
To: All House members
Subject: Access to Cemeteries (Previous HB 2228)

In the upcoming session, I plan to reintroduce House Bill 2228 which passed the House Local Government Committee unanimously last session. This bill allows reasonable access to cemeteries for anyone for the purpose of visitation, as well as establishes procedures for the sale and purchase of a cemetery, and continuation of honoring purchased burial plots.

Currently, in my district, families are forbidden access to their loved ones’ graves in a privately owned cemetery. The new owners have posted NO TRESPASSING signs restricting members of the families from attempting to visit their mothers’, fathers’, and children’s graves. I am introducing this legislation so that no one has to go through the additional pain of not being able to visit and mourn their deceased family members.

Please join me and co-sponsor this important legislation.
