Subject: | Assault Weapons Ban - Former HB 2229 |
I plan to re-introduce legislation that will effectively ban the possession, purchase, transfer, use or manufacture of an assault weapon. A new section is created within Title 18 that defines and bans the above acts with regard to assault weapons in this Commonwealth, and also provides for exceptions for members of the U.S. Armed Forces, Reserve, National Guard or law enforcement while performing and traveling to and from official duties. The penalty this bill carries for a violation is an M1 (1st degree Misdemeanor) which caps at five (5) years imprisonment and a $10,000 fine. I do not take this authorship lightly. I know full-well that this remains an emotionally and politically charged issue on both sides of the argument. I have also seen firsthand the pointless and needless devastation assault weapons have caused families and entire communities countless times.
