| Subject: | Resolution Honoring POW/MIA Recognition Day, September 16, 2016 |
In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution recognizing September 16, 2016 as “POW/MIA Recognition Day” in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The resolution remembers and pays tribute to the more than 91,000 servicemen and women who are unaccounted for from the wars and armed conflicts the United States has been involved in since World War I. For many Americans, recent 20th Century wars and conflicts like Korea and Vietnam bring difficult memories. For former prisoners of war and the families of missing personnel, these memories are emotional and particularly painful. In Korea and Vietnam, hundreds of thousands of brave Americans left their homes and families to defend freedom and democracy in the face of communist aggression. Thousands lost their lives in battle and the fate of many still remains unknown. Approximately 50,000 former prisoners of war live among us today, including those held captive during World War II, who still cope with the physical and emotional effects of their captivity. I believe we owe a profound debt of gratitude to the quiet heroes who have served our nation so well and sacrificed so much. We also are in debt to the families of those still missing in action. This resolution pledges our unwavering commitment to achieve the fullest possible accounting for of their loved ones. I ask that you please join me in co-sponsoring this important legislation. |
