MEMORANDUM

To: All House members
Subject: Reclassification of Mead

In the near future I will be introducing legislation to define the term “mead” in the Liquor Code and permit Pennsylvania’s six meaderies to market their products in beer distributors around the state.

While mead is classified as a wine by the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board, it is more often associated with home brewers. In fact, mead is included in the charter of the Brewers Association and the American Homebrewers Association. In other states around the country, mead products are sold alongside malt and brewed beverage products and as a result sells well. Allowing this home brewed product to be carried by private distributors, who specialize in craft products, would allow Pennsylvania’s meaderies to immediately grow and create life sustaining jobs.

I encourage you to support this legislation and show your support for these small Pennsylvania businesses.

Introduced as HB1420
