MEMORANDUM

Subject: (Revised Memo) National Memory Screening Day in Pennsylvania

In the near future, I plan to introduce a resolution designating Tuesday, November 19, 2013, as National Memory Screening Day in Pennsylvania.

November is National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month. Alzheimer’s disease is a slow, progressive disorder of the brain that results in loss of memory and other cognitive function and, eventually, death. Alzheimer’s is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States, affecting an estimated 5.4 million Americans. In 2010, Pennsylvania alone had more than 280,000 people 65 years and older experiencing this devastating disease, but individuals can avoid or correct medical problems connected with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementia-related conditions with early detection.

In an effort to promote the importance of early diagnosis, the Alzheimer's Foundation of America (AFA), together with local organizations and health care professionals across the country, set aside one day each November as National Memory Screening Day. This year National Memory Screening Day is November 19th, and health care professionals will be available at hundreds of sites throughout the Commonwealth to administer free, confidential, face-to-face memory screenings. Information on free screening sites is available online at http://www.afascreenings.org or by calling the toll-free number (866) AFA-8484.

Please join me in co-sponsoring this resolution designating Tuesday, November 19, 2013, as National Memory Screening Day in Pennsylvania. If you have any questions, you may contact Kathy Seidl of my office at 7-4117 or kseidl@pahouse.net.

Thank you.
