MEMORANDUM

Subject: Cosponsorship - Repeal of Consent for Treatment of Breast Disease, Act 213 of 1984

Breast Cancer is an important, intimate, and very difficult battle for too many women and men across the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. In an effort to alleviate any unnecessary angst for breast cancer patients, I ask that you consider cosponsoring legislation to repeal the outdated Consent for Treatment of Breast Disease, Act 213 of 1984.

The law is no longer relevant and fails to address remarkable advancements provided by current medical practice. Repealing this outdated law will provide better coordinated care for Pennsylvanians and alleviate unnecessary anxiety for patients during some of their most vulnerable times. Requiring a separate consent form for the treatment of breast disease is no longer necessary.

Repealing Act 213 of 1984 will provide patients and their physicians with the opportunity to identify and discuss the least invasive options and coordination thereof, rather than using the unsophisticated process required by current law.

This legislation is supported by the Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition.
