MEMORANDUM To: All House Members From: Representative Marc J. Gergely Date: May 3, 2013 Subject: Co-sponsorship: Amending the Engineer, Land Surveyor and Geologist Registration Law In the near future I will be introducing legislation that amends the Engineer, Land Surveyor and Geologist Registration Law. The legislation deals primarily with ensuring that our Commonwealth’s engineers have the title protection that they need. Under the current law, only licensed engineers may use the title “engineer”. Under my proposal, the new protected title will be “professional engineer” thus relaxing the statute’s title protection. The bill also eliminates a number of exemptions. The exemptions that I am proposing to eliminate would make for less confusion and better public protection. Finally, my bill would modernize the way engineers could seal and sign documents. I am adding a provision to the current law that would allow for the electronic signature of plans and documents. As more and more design work is computer generated, this modernization is crucial. My intent is to bring about a safer Pennsylvania without creating an undue burden on the engineering community. This legislation is supported by the Pennsylvania Society of Professional Engineers. |
