Subject: | Co-sponsorship - Corrections Officers Bill of Rights (Former HB-2549) |
In the near future I will be re-introducing HB-2549 of the 2011-2012 legislative session that will create the Corrections Officers Bill of Rights. This legislation will ensure that Pennsylvania’s corrections officers maintain certain rights and will provide them with the ability to appeal during disciplinary proceedings. The Corrections Officers Bill of Rights is being introduced in light of recent events in Pittsburgh, where eight corrections officers were suspended without pay and benefits for almost a year without the ability to ask questions related to why they were suspended or to defend themselves, as well as previous events in other state correctional institutions. Implementation of this legislation, which is based on laws enacted in other states, would assure that corrections officers are afforded due process whenever accusations are made against them by inmates. I strongly believe, as does the leadership of the Pennsylvania State Corrections Officers Association, that any corrections officer found guilty of a crime should be removed from duty and prosecuted to the full extent of the law. This legislation would guarantee the preservation of constitutional rights for our corrections officers. Please join me in co-sponsoring this important piece of legislation. If you have any questions regarding same please contact Kelly Roth in my office at via email at kroth@pahousegop.com or by calling 787-3335. Previous co-sponsors of former HB-2549 are BENNINGHOFF, METZGAR, BAKER, BRENNAN, D. COSTA, DALEY, J.
